Nina’s story is one of incredible resilience, determination, and transformation. Born and raised in the Quad Cities, Illinois, Nina set out on her own at just 21. However—as so often happens—life didn’t go as planned. For a time, she found herself without a permanent home, relying on the generosity of friends and sleeping on couches. Determined to build a better future, Nina applied for the Section 8 program, hoping for stability. For over 30 years, the Section 8 voucher provided her with housing security—but deep down, she dreamed of having more.

“I thought being on Section 8 made me safe,” Nina shares. “And in many ways, it was such a lifeline, but overtime I realized I was in a place to strive for more and I was minimizing myself.”

The turning point came when a co-worker encouraged Nina to attend a potential Homeowner meeting for Habitat for Humanity Lake County. Despite her fears that her low credit score would prevent her from qualifying, she felt a spark of hope. Nina worked tirelessly to meet the Homeownership program requirements and overcome her financial barriers and was accepted into the program.

Nina’s journey to homeownership wasn’t just about securing a roof over her head—it was about building a foundation for her teenage son and granddaughter. Though she originally hoped to remain in Zion, Nina worked toward a Habitat home being built in North Chicago and has built an incredible life in her new neighborhood. Her commitment and positivity were evident throughout the process, impressing volunteers, staff, and fellow Homeowners. While working on her Sweat Equity hours, Nina balanced her job with an incredible personal achievement – earning her Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from the College of Lake County at the age of 57.

“Becoming a Habitat homeowner gave me a safe home of my own, peace, and confidence in my choices.”

Habitat Lake County’s Director of Family Services, Eunice, marvels at Nina’s dedication to building a better life for herself and her family. “Nina has a kind spirit and will take a leap of faith with determination to excel,” Eunice says. “She speaks from her experiences and encourages other Habitat Homeowners not to give up.”

For Nina, becoming a homeowner wasn’t just about leaving behind her Section 8 voucher—it was about stepping into freedom and possibility. “I finally surrendered my voucher, and now I am free,” Nina reflects. “Becoming a Habitat homeowner gave me a safe home of my own, peace, and confidence in my choices.”

Today, Nina is more than just a homeowner; she’s a Habitat spokesperson, sharing her story to inspire others in the community. She also works for an organization where she is able to support individuals transitioning from incarceration, motivating them to find a new life path and make the

“Through my transformation with Habitat for Humanity, I am confident in my decisions, and I am now able to help others,” Nina explains.

Nina’s journey from homelessness to homeowner is a powerful example of what is possible with a sense of hope, determination, and the right support system. She took a leap of faith—and today, she’s not just a homeowner; she’s providing a solid financial future for her family and acts a beacon of hope for others in her community.
